Imagine what you can do here. Apple is a place where extraordinary people gather to do their lives best work. It’s the diversity of those people and their ideas that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do.
Description
APPLE INC has the following available in San Diego, California. Ensure all of the services and systems that Shazam relies on are operating at their highest level, so that the service is available to its users. This involves: applying the best technology for the job, applying the best security practices to comply with Apple’s policies, thinking about privacy and its impact in the systems we run, making sure architecture is sound and appropriate for each of Shazam’s components, carefully weighing cost vs availability/reliability to find a happy balance, and owning, operating and taking care of the health of the system (through on-call rotations). Help development teams embrace the principles of ownership and responsibility for the systems they deploy in production systems as they develop software. Embed with development teams and act as extensions of those teams to propagate best practices. Work with all the teams inside and outside Shazam and connect all the dots between teams to unify best practices for the betterment and maintenance of systems, break silos, share communication between different teams, bring improvements and new ways of doing things across the board. Engage with development teams to help them expose the systems and application metrics that allow us to troubleshoot problems in the future and have visibility over what systems are doing at any moment. Think about distributed systems and help development teams that are focused on individual parts of it. Ensure all of the major components of Shazam are able to communicate and transfer data. Ensure there are no data mismatches, problems in communication, security, access, etc. Work with other teams to ensure that there are no blockers and they are employing the best practices in all aspects (privacy, resource utilization, security, cost, etc.). Help Development teams see the full picture of how their systems interact with other systems and how they fit in the overall Shazam architecture. Work with and assist multiple development teams to maintain the key backend systems that power Shazam, including the end user set of API (Application Programming Interface) micro-services, backend recognition system, metadata systems, pipelines, the production of reports/metrics/etc. for further analysis within Shazam and/or Apple, and the other myriad of systems that interconnect within Apple to provide them with data/reports/etc. These systems run on the Cloud and normally use backend systems such as AWS and Google Cloud Platform to store and process data. Supervise these systems to deploy new software, make they are error-free, make sure we apply the paradigm of least privilege to restrict access to data, make sure that the Cloud platform has enough resources, minimize costs as much as it is feasible, scale up and down depending on usage/users/etc. throughout the day/week/year, fix security vulnerabilities as soon as they are discovered, ensure proper backups are taken, repetitive tasks are automated and we build platforms to facilitate other team’s work. Participate in the development lifecycle (from security to resource utilization, to cost and ease of maintainability) at a very deep level, from the early stages of feature design all the way to seeing it released into production for users to enjoy. Work with the development teams to write and/or review code and configuration that will make it to production systems early on, to avoid future problems. Write and review code, including automation code, using Shell scripting, Python, Golang and C, and deeply understand how applications work. Read other teams’ code written in Golang, Scala, Kotlin, Java, Javascript, etc. to understand what Shazam’s production code is doing when there is an issue (performance, bug, etc.). Use code to manage infrastructure (Terraform and Puppet) which is used to reproduce environments (staging, production, etc.) reliably. Craft, analyze and troubleshoot large software systems, using knowledge from networking, operating systems, tracing, logging, monitoring, on-call system configuration, code
development and management, Infrastructure as Software and Configuration management, etc. Look for
ways to improve Shazam's services, and take personal ownership for the quality of the services offered.40 hours/week.
