The Advanced Process Lab is a development space with equipment dedicated to developing processes for the Manufacturing Design team. In our lab the primary focus will be metal additive manufacturing. This is a hands on position and requires candidate to be on site 5 days a week to drive projects to completion.

Description

• Support day to day operations of a metals additive manufacturing lab including safe setup, operation, and all maintenance from a variety of equipment manufacturers.
• Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications
• Conduct process optimization DOE’s, using data and hands-on approaches together to find solutions to sophisticated challenges
• Hands on lab expectations: transport and load powders, prepare build plates with CNC equipment, run metal 3D print build jobs, and support post processing such as de-powdering, cleaning, heat treatment, wire EDM, and inspection.
• Proficiently use hand, power, and pneumatic tools for various tasks.
• Handle powder including sieving, sampling, loading, and cleaning.
• Monitor builds according to a flexible schedule, and ensure traceability of all powder and parts.
• Support metrology operations including dimensional inspection, and cosmetic inspection equipment.
• Develop specifications and characterization techniques for raw material input inspection
• Conduct material characterization of additive manufactured parts
• Collaborate with 3rd party labs for advanced characterization procedures, including: SEM, TEM, XRD and other techniques to quantify microstructure and material properties
• Generate test procedures for characterizing material properties, analyze data collected from test procedures and create & present reports that can shared cross functional teams.
• Collaborate with internal partners and equipment suppliers to develop and refine metal additive manufacturing processes and equipment
• Attend trainings to learn to safely operate state of the art equipment from a variety of manufacturers, and stay up to date with current best practices.
• Ability to collaborate with vendors / internal resources to close gaps in ability to operate the lab.
• Ability to coordinate equipment install or removal.
• Work with EH&S to ensure adequate compliance.
• Attend OAC meetings as applicable

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in mechanical, chemical, material science, or related fields preferred

  • 3+ years of hands on experience in additive manufacturing environment, in mechanical product development, manufacturing engineering, tooling engineering, high precision fabrication, or similar roles.

  • Experience operating Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) equipment in a laboratory or production environment

  • Ability to travel up to 25% is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in mechanical, chemical, material science, or related fields preferred

  • Experience and training with safe handling and disposal of powdered metals including titanium

  • Experience with metallographic measurement including mount, polish, etching, microscope imaging, and basic metrology such as Instron, hardness testing, and 3D scanning.

  • Experience managing material characterization efforts with outside labs

  • Experience with generating process control plans and corresponding quality plans at contract manufacturers

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, and operate machine tools such as grinder, polisher, bandsaw, lathe and mill

  • Ability to be qualified to operate forklift

  • Ability to work in an isolated lab environment

  • Ability to travel up to 25% is required

  • Applies a hands-on approach to engineering and problem-solving

  • Demonstrates commitment and tenacity; a self-starter who learns quickly and adapts to find new solutions in the face of adversity

  • Knowledge of advanced materials characterization techniques including: SEM, TEM, ICP-OES, Optical Profileometry

  • Communicates technical information clearly and persuasively in both written and verbal forms, adapting content to suit the intended audience

  • Employs project management tools to effectively plan and track work to completion; diligent and reliable in completing tasks and balance priorities independently

  • Experience on the shop floor in a professional context
