DESCRIPTION

Lead investigation of material and material processing problems, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate action, own problem resolution, and document results. Apply and improve processes such as material and material processing validation, quality auditing, design validation and 7-step problem solving, and utilize the tools and techniques for material characterization, material testing, non-destructive testing, mechanical and physical properties measurement, simulation and statistical data analysis to enable high quality decision making. Make decisions in the areas of material and material processing selection and development, qualification, and inspection that impact product quality, reliability, durability, and capability. Create, improve, and apply material specifications and standards and ensure requirements and conformance to capability and quality needs. Apply Principles of Statistical Methods to analyze technical data and independent variables using analysis of variance, regression, and design of experiments to make rigorous, data-based decisions. Recommend corrective actions considering material limitation and manufacturing constraints to protect the customer and prevent reoccurrence as part of Component Failure Analysis. Evaluate component requirements regarding form and function in order to identify base material and processing options, select manufacturing route and select material and process based on best-fit option aligned to requirements, and validate selected material and process by defining necessary test plan to prove capability to requirements. Solve problems using a systematic analysis process to create problem traceability, determine the assignable cause, implement data-based solution, identify systemic root causes and recommend actions to prevent problem reoccurrence. Interpret mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlate these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness. Define appropriate material characterization schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met. Document information and communicate to stakeholders to enable improved technical productivity and effective knowledge transfer to other engineers.
