Job Description

The Head of International Public Affairs (IPA) is responsible for strategic external communications for the International Therapeutics Business Unit at AbbVie. The Head of IPA manages a team of communications leaders across international immunology, oncology and specialty therapeutic areas as well as the Europe and Intercontinental Areas. The Head of IPA is a member of the International Therapeutics extended leadership team and reports to the Vice President of Global Therapeutics Communications and Public Affairs.

This position is based in Lake County, Illinois.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Leads the development of the International Public Affairs strategic priorities to advance the business objectives of both the International Therapeutics Business Unit and AbbVie’s enterprise priorities.

  • Partners with international market access, government affairs, affiliate teams, and external stakeholders to develop and advance public affairs strategies that create a favorable environment for access to innovative treatments.

  • Leads therapeutic area public affairs teams in the development of measurable communications strategies that maximize our growth brands and move stakeholders to action.

  • Serves as business partner and advisor to affiliate public affairs heads around the world, ensuring perspectives are consistent and connected back to the AbbVie enterprise. Supports in-country response on high-profile issues.

  • Advances AbbVie’s international growth strategy by elevating corporate visibility and reputation in key international markets.

  • Partners with Corporate Communications, Corporate Marketing and Corporate Responsibility and Global Philanthropy to advance reputation of AbbVie.

  • Proactively identifies and navigates external issues impacting our international commercial business, working closely with appropriate crisis teams to ensure business continuity.

  • Interfaces and aligns with leaders in various functions and corporate constituencies, including government affairs, investor relations, legal, commercial, regulatory, medical, clinical and senior management.

  • Builds, leads and develops a team of seasoned strategic communicators to drive and deliver on the strategic priorities for the Corporate Affairs organization and the broader enterprise business priorities.

  • Models the AbbVie ways of working, building and implementing new capabilities and efficiencies across the Corporate Affairs and Global Therapeutics teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15+ years’ experience in public affairs, government affairs, or a related field, with a significant portion of experience in international markets.

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or life sciences field.

  • Experience working with senior level executives.

  • Candidate must have a deep understanding of the healthcare industry and geopolitical dynamics.

  • Must have strong executive presence, excellent writing skills, and ability to work under tight deadlines with great attention to detail.

  • Strong influencing and networking skills to build collaborative and effective relationships in a matrix environment.

  • Experience and interest in leading and managing teams.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. Salary: $200,500 - $382,000
