DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Chemical Systems Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Columbus, IN location.   

*In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: *    

  • Advance Chemical System Reliability: By designing accelerated aging tests, you'll help predict long-term performance and identify failure modes early, improving product durability.

  • Enhance Diagnostic Capabilities: Your work in characterizing chemical systems will support better diagnostics and health monitoring of active components, enabling smarter maintenance and design decisions.

  • Drive Performance Optimization: Through electrochemical testing, you'll generate insights that directly influence hardware and control system designs for improved efficiency and resilience.

  • Support Data-Driven Design: Your modeling and simulation efforts will guide product design choices, ensuring systems meet functional requirements and perform reliably under real-world conditions.

  • Solve Complex Product Issues: You'll play a key role in identifying root causes of product problems and implementing robust, data-backed solutions that prevent recurrence and protect customer satisfaction.

  • Validate Product Integrity: By managing verification and validation processes, you'll ensure products meet performance standards and reduce risk before launch.

  • Foster Collaboration and Knowledge Sharing: Building networks and communicating effectively across teams will help align efforts, share insights, and accelerate innovation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:    

  • Strong Technical Foundation: Deep understanding of chemical reaction kinetics, catalysis, gas dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics to solve complex engineering problems.

  • Advanced Simulation & Programming Skills: Proficiency in tools like AVL-Cruise M, AVL-FIRE, MATLAB/SIMULINK, and Python to model, simulate, and analyze chemical and electrochemical systems.

  • Domain Expertise: Knowledge of engine exhaust aftertreatment and experience with fuel-cell and battery systems to guide product development and testing.

  • Project Leadership: Ability to independently lead projects or own complex components with ambiguity, while being accountable for outcomes and team coordination.

  • Process Improvement Mindset: Drive the development and enhancement of work processes and systems across your discipline to improve efficiency and innovation.

  • Mentorship & Collaboration: Support and guide technicians, interns, and junior engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and team growth.

  • Analytical & Decision-Making Skills: Use data-driven analysis to influence technical direction, solve product problems, and make timely decisions that move projects forward.

  • Effective Communication & Networking: Build strong relationships across teams and communicate clearly with diverse audiences to align goals and share insights.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical consultant in model development, analysis methodology, and the company's philosophy and processes for component and system modeling across various platform teams in different business units. 

  • Develop, assess, and enhance various physics-based and AI-driven models for aftertreatment catalysts. 

  • Implement modeling technologies that directly impact Analysis-Led Design (ALD) for emission solution development programs.

Additional Job Skill Requirements

  • PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with relevant doctoral research work, or an M.S. degree with 3+ years of relevant professional work experience, is preferred.

  • Strong analytical ability in chemical reaction kinetics, catalysis, gas dynamics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, demonstrated by applying these fundamentals to solve real-life engineering problems.

  • Engine exhaust aftertreatment knowledge.

  • Proficiency with various advanced numerical methods and algorithms.

  • Prior experience in working with fuel-cell and battery systems is a plus.

  • The capability to efficiently apply one or more engineering simulation software and programming languages, including AVL-Cruise M, AVL-FIRE, MATLAB/SIMULINK, and Python, is desirable.
