As a principle/distinguished Software Engineer, you will work closely with designers, product managers and other engineers (frontend, backend, machine learning, quality) to revolutionize the advertising space for eBay and beyond.

We are looking for a senior engineer / architect to lead building complex, large scale services that run machine learning models. This is a great opportunity to build the foundation of a mission critical area from grounds up.

Primary Responsibilities:

You must be very familiar with and an advocate of common Agile practices:

• Designing elegant technical solutions to customer problems

• Design new experiences for eBay sellers and advertisers to promote their products, manage their advertising campaigns, and improve their sales

• Proficient in Test Driven Development, clean code, software craftsmanship

• Build highly available, scalable user facing applications and RESTful Public APIs

• Develop systems using Java, Scala, Node.js

• Learn new external and internal technologies as the need/opportunity arises

• Operate within our internal open source community where we share a variety of projects and codebases

• Build, test, and deploy your code in a continuous manner

• Execute as part of a cross-functional Agile team that rapidly delivers iterative value to customers

• Contribute to technical conversations and debates, and decide upon approaches and tools to utilize

• Lead by example and share knowledge with the team

You will also be expected to:

• Integrate closely w/ colleagues in different functional groups and remote offices

• Promote a culture of "internal open source" where teams can contribute to each other's code bases regardless of organizational boundaries

• Enjoy being part of a team of motivated, collaborative, high-achievers

• Communicate effectively within your team and across teams.

• Identify project risks, quantify risk/benefit relationships and provide alternative solutions as well as risk mitigation

Job Requirements:

• BS/BA in Computer Science or related field plus 15 years work experience or MS with 10 years of relevant experience

• Strong Experience with JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, Scala), Hadoop

• Experience in building large scale Web Services and Backend Applications using Java/J2EE, RESTful Web Services, HTTP and JSON technologies

• Experience with big data technologies like Hadoop, Kafka and Spark

• Experience building back end systems that run Machine Learning based services

• Deep understanding of design patterns, and experience working in a layered architecture

• Mentor junior engineers
