How will you make an impact in this role?
The Global Risk & Compliance Organization (“GRC”) independently oversees the company’s risk-taking and risk management activities, including the comprehensive identification, management, and mitigation of risks within the Company’s risk appetite. GRC ensures the company operates in a safe, sound and fully compliant manner within all applicable regulatory expectations. We create and maintain the overall risk management framework while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.

How will you make an impact in this role?
We are seeking a highly experienced and collaborative leader to serve as Vice President, ERM Governance, Reporting, and Independent Review overseeing US Consumer Services (USCS) and Global Commercial Services (GCS).
This senior leader will report directly to the Business Unit Chief Risk Officer (CRO) within Enterprise Risk Management and Risk Oversight (ERMRO). The VP will oversee a team of risk professionals to provide comprehensive risk governance, independent review, and reporting for USCS and GCS, while supporting the CRO in their role as co-chair of the respective Business Unit Risk Committees.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong executive presence, proven ability to lead large teams, deep expertise in risk governance, and the ability to provide credible challenge on complex and material risk issues.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a business-aligned CRO support function for two of American Express’s most critical businesses—US Consumer Services and Global Commercial Services. You will play a key role in shaping risk strategy, enhancing governance, and enabling the CRO and leadership to make well-informed decisions that protect and grow the company.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Identification & Assessment
Direct proactive identification, assessment, monitoring, and reporting of key risks across USCS and GCS, including credit, market, operational, compliance, strategic, and reputational risks.
Provide independent review and challenge of risk assessments to ensure completeness, accuracy, and effective identification of top and emerging risks.
Anticipate and escalate emerging risks, integrating insights into the enterprise-wide risk framework.
Risk Governance & Independent Review
Oversee implementation of enterprise risk frameworks within USCS and GCS, including risk appetite, concentration risk, and risk governance standards.
Provide effective challenge to business practices, ensuring alignment with enterprise-wide requirements and regulatory expectations.
Support the CRO in setting minimum requirements and agenda topics for Business Risk Committees and validate execution.
Monitoring, Reporting & Communication
Lead development and delivery of executive-ready risk reporting, including Key Risk Indicators (KRIs), risk appetite metrics, and risk aggregation across USCS and GCS.
Provide timely, accurate, and transparent reporting to business unit leadership, the CRO, and senior risk committees.
Direct adoption of automation and data visualization tools to improve reporting efficiency and accuracy.
Strategic Leadership & CRO Partnership
Act as senior deputy to the CRO, providing strategic input into risk committee agendas, executive materials, and business decision-making.
Serve as a credible voice of challenge and advisor to senior business leaders on material risk issues.
Partner with the CRO in preparing for internal and external stakeholder engagements, including regulators and auditors.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing team of Directors, Senior Managers, and Managers.
Create a culture of proactive risk management, accountability, and professional development.
Ensure team is effectively structured and resourced to deliver on oversight responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications
12 years of experience in risk management functions at large financial institutions; G-SIB or large-bank experience strongly preferred.
Deep knowledge of risk management frameworks, regulatory expectations, and oversight methodologies.
Proven ability to influence and communicate at the most senior levels, including executives and regulators.
Strong track record of building and leading high-performing teams in complex, matrixed organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in risk management, business administration, finance, or related field.
Experience developing Key Risk Indicators and risk appetite frameworks.
Familiarity with data visualization and reporting automation tools.
Prior experience partnering directly with a CRO or senior risk leader.
Qualifications
Salary Range: $185,000.00 to $260,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
