Description

At American Express, our culture is built on a 175-year history of innovation, shared values and Leadership Behaviors, and an unwavering commitment to back our customers, communities, and colleagues. As part of Team Amex, you'll experience this powerful backing with comprehensive support for your holistic well-being and many opportunities to learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow your career.

Here, your voice and ideas matter, your work makes an impact, and together, you will help us define the future of American Express.

We are seeking an AI Product Manager to partner with our department’s AI leadership in executing our AI vision and strategy. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Enablement, you will collaborate closely with senior leaders to shape the AI product roadmap and deliver impactful AI and automation features. This role focuses on strong execution and influence driving product delivery and optimizing processes by working with cross-functional teams, rather than through direct managerial authority. You will leverage your expertise in AI and effective communication to lead through influence, ensuring our AI initiatives are successfully implemented and aligned with business goals.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Discover & prioritize opportunities. Support discovery and prioritization with Global Tax leaders and SMEs; prepare option analyses (LLM apps, ML, Power Platform, RPA, integrations), quantify impact, and recommend sequencing in partnership with department leadership to inform the roadmap and business cases.

  • Deep process analysis. Execute hands-on process mapping (incl. POD/POA), rationalization, and document solution options with clear pros/cons and control implications; socialize and refine recommendations with leadership and control partners.

  • Requirements & design. Lead day-to-day requirements (personas, user stories, acceptance criteria, data needs) and co-define success metrics (accuracy, precision/recall, latency, STP, ROI) with leadership guidance, ensuring clear traceability from goals to delivery.

  • Build with the enterprise. Act as Product Owner partnering with AET to leverage enterprise platforms; coordinate with architects, data engineers, and infra to design/build integrations, APIs, and interfaces as needed.

  • AI product delivery. Own backlog and sprint execution for assigned initiatives; drive end-to-end testing (functional, data quality, bias/fairness, privacy, security), organize parallel runs, and manage controlled rollouts through AET processes escalating risks/blocks promptly.

  • Model governance & risk. Apply and operationalize enterprise guardrails for GenAI/ML (prompting, RAG, grounding, evaluation); partner with Model Risk, Privacy, and Controls to meet requirements; monitor performance and data/model drift, and coordinate retraining plans, maintaining audit evidence.

  • Change management & enablement. Develop training assets and run enablement (playbooks, office hours); capture adoption feedback and metrics and iterate solutions guiding teams to adopt new capabilities in line with leadership’s plan.

  • Stakeholder management. Provide crisp, recurring status, risks, and dependencies to Finance leadership; propose mitigations, align decisions/action items, and chase blockers to resolution, escalating when needed.

  • Documentation & reporting. Own Confluence documentation for assigned products (requirements, designs, test evidence, runbooks) and update bi-weekly summaries/scorecards and KPI dashboards, highlighting value realization and next actions.

  • eam leadership. Lead cross-functional workstreams through influence (no direct line management); mentor peers/junior PMs on best practices; coordinate vendor/consultant deliverables for assigned scope while aligning decisions with leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience & AI Leadership: 8 years of product management experience, with at least 5 years dedicated to AI/ML-driven products. This includes working on generative AI/LLM initiatives as well as traditional machine learning use cases, demonstrating an ability to drive cutting-edge AI solutions from concept to launch.

  • Strategic Product Delivery in Domain: Proven track record of leading end-to-end delivery of data/AI products in Finance, Tax, or FinTech domains (global experience preferred). You have successfully guided AI-powered solutions from idea through deployment in these environments, working closely with machine learning engineers, data scientists, and analytics teams.

  • AI/ML Knowledge & Responsible AI: Strong understanding of the AI/ML model development lifecycle – from training data strategy and model development to evaluation metrics and deployment. While not necessarily a hands-on ML engineer, you are conversant in model performance metrics (e.g. accuracy, precision/recall) and MLOps practices for model deployment and maintenance. Committed to Responsible AI best practices, ensuring that models are developed and governed with ethics, fairness, and compliance in mind throughout their lifecycle.

  • Enterprise Platforms & Data Tools: Familiarity with modern data platforms and cloud services. Comfortable leveraging public cloud ecosystems (Azure, AWS, GCP) and orchestrating data pipelines (ETL/ELT) to support AI initiatives. Experienced with data analytics and visualization tools (such as Power BI, Tableau or similar) to interpret and communicate data insights. (Exposure to enterprise low-code platforms like Microsoft Power Platform is a plus and indicative of an ability to integrate AI solutions within broader business workflows.)

  • Agile Methodology & Team Leadership: Working knowledge of Agile product delivery and project management. Skilled at writing clear user stories, managing product backlogs, and conducting user acceptance testing (UAT). Experience leading cross-functional squads (combining engineering, data science, design, etc.) in a scrum or agile environment to iteratively deliver product improvements and value.

  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially in engaging with senior stakeholders and executives. Proven ability to synthesize complex technical concepts (like AI/ML model capabilities and limitations) and translate them into clear, compelling business terms. You can effectively articulate the business value of technical innovations, facilitate decision-making with non-technical leaders, and build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Education & Certifications: An advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., M.S. or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, or related technical field; MBA with a technology focus; etc.) is advantageous. Professional certifications in AI/ML, cloud computing, or product management (for example, AWS/GCP AI certifications, Agile/Scrum certification, or AI Product Management credentials) are a plus, indicating a commitment to continual learning.

  • Technical Background: Prior hands-on experience in software engineering, data science, or analytics is a strong plus. While this role is not an individual contributor technical position, a background in these areas helps in deeply understanding technical team concerns and fosters credibility when making product decisions involving complex AI/ML systems.

  • Enterprise & Regulatory Experience: Experience deploying AI or data-driven solutions in enterprise and regulated environments is preferred. Familiarity with financial regulations, compliance standards, and data privacy requirements (e.g., handling of sensitive financial data, model risk management frameworks, or global data protection laws) will help ensure that AI products are implemented with the necessary governance and risk management.

  • Microsoft Power Platform & Ecosystem: Hands-on experience with Microsoft’s Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate) or similar enterprise automation and analytics platforms is a plus. Ability to leverage such tools for quick prototyping or integration of AI capabilities into existing business processes demonstrates a pragmatic approach to delivering value with AI.

  • Innovation & Thought Leadership: A passion for innovation in AI/ML and a forward-looking mindset. Participation in the AI/ML community, such as presenting at industry conferences, publishing insights, or contributing to open-source projects, is valued as it shows you stay current with emerging trends (e.g., the latest in generative AI techniques) and can bring fresh ideas while still innovating responsibly within a business context.
