The team spans strategy, policy, online safety risk analysis, engineering, operations, and research, while supporting all parts of the Apple ecosystem. The team collaborates with external experts, victim advocacy groups and teams across Apple, working to understand key partner perspectives, priorities, and concerns, and develop insights that directly advise the threat prevention and mitigation strategies and safety solutions.
As a Threat Analyst, you will be a key player in proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with new and existing product features. You will work closely with product teams throughout the development lifecycle, fostering positive relationships and collaborating to build safety into the core of our products. Your emotional intelligence, analytical, technical skills, and pragmatic approach will be important in balancing user safety, business objectives, and technical feasibility. You will contribute to shaping our safety-by-design practice and ensuring our products are safe and trusted by millions of users worldwide.
Description
This role will:
Proactive Risk Assessment & Mitigation:
- Collaborate with product teams during planning stages to identify potential Trust and Safety risks associated with proposed features.
- Actively participate in feature definition, providing input on mitigations and safety considerations from the outset.
- Help evolve and apply our objective risk framework to assess and quantify the level of risk for well-defined features.
- In-depth analysis and understanding of the UX and technical design of the feature, with a desire to test comprehensively the different functionalities and feasibility of proposed mitigations.
- Develop and recommend optimal mitigation strategies, balancing user safety, trust, feature timelines, level of effort (LOE), and established precedents.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of emerging threats and trends in online abuse, and apply this knowledge to risk assessments.
Safety by Design & Principles:
- Contribute to the development and evolution of a core set of Trust and Safety principles to guide product development and inform our safety-by-design practice.
- Advocate for the integration of these principles into product development processes.
- Work with leadership to ratify these principles and ensure their consistent application across the organization.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Effectively communicate complex Trust and Safety concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, adapting your approach to meet the team's level of awareness and understanding.
- Build trust and rapport with product managers, engineers, designers, and other partners by demonstrating emotional intelligence, understanding their constraints and objectives, and working collaboratively to find industry-leading solutions.
- Facilitate constructive discussions about risk mitigation strategies, acknowledging the tradeoffs between safety, user experience, and business goals.
- Document risk assessments, mitigation plans, and key decisions in a clear and concise manner.
- Champion a culture of safety awareness throughout the product development organization.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging technologies related to Trust and Safety.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of our objective risk framework.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Sociology, Criminology, Legal Studies, Public Policy) or equivalent experience.
3 years of experience in Trust and Safety, risk management, policy development, product security or a related field.
Strong understanding of online safety issues, including child safety, interpersonal safety, and other forms of online abuse.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and assess risks in complex systems.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across teams.
Demonstrated ability to balance user safety with business objectives and technical constraints.
A pragmatic and solution-oriented attitude, with a willingness to compromise and find creative solutions.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working directly with product development teams.
Familiarity with product development methodologies.
Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations related to online safety (e.g., DSA, OSA).
Experience in developing and implementing Trust and Safety policies and procedures.
Certifications in risk management or related fields.
Experience presenting to leadership.
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $141,800 and $258,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
