The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is where great legal minds influence global business strategy. Operations
The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) Operations team integrates operational expertise with business acumen to streamline processes and support diverse practice groups within the GCO. By focusing on risk management, financial management, learning and communications, process optimization, technology and innovation, and several other key areas, this team ensures that the GCO operates efficiently and effectively. As the backbone of the GCO, our support spans strategic advice, legal service delivery, project management and significantly contributes to the GCO’s strategy enabling it to support the broader organization.
Role & Responsibilities:
Senior Manager, GCO AI – Legal
The Senior Manager, GCO AI will play a key role in shaping and delivering the Legal function’s use of generative and advanced AI technologies. This role focuses on embedding AI-enabled solutions into core legal and operational activities, driving measurable improvements in quality, efficiency, and insight, while ensuring full alignment with Amex’s risk, compliance, and data governance frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the development and execution of the Legal function’s generative AI strategy, aligned with enterprise technology, risk, and control priorities.
Act as a subject-matter expert and trusted advisor on AI for Legal leadership and senior stakeholders.
Embed generative AI capabilities into core legal and operational activities, improving productivity, consistency, and decision-making.
Own vendor evaluation, selection, onboarding, and ongoing management, including solution design, implementation, and use-case development.
Build and manage a pipeline of AI use cases, including prioritization, delivery sequencing, and benefits tracking.
Design and pilot AI-enabled solutions in controlled environments, ensuring appropriate governance, transparency, and human oversight.
Evaluate emerging agentic and adaptive AI technologies relevant to legal operations and maintain a forward-looking technology roadmap.
Develop a pipeline of next-generation AI capabilities to inform future roadmap and investment decisions.
Partner closely with the enterprise GenAI enablement teams to ensure alignment with approved platforms, standards, and controls.
Collaborate with technology and engineering teams to define solution architecture, integration approaches, and delivery plans.
Act as product owner for AI platforms and tools, including configuration, optimization, and ongoing governance.
Manage third-party risk, professional services engagements, and associated budgets, ensuring strong delivery outcomes and value for money.
Define and track business impact metrics, using insights to inform continuous improvement and future roadmap decisions.
Ensure all AI solutions comply with legal, regulatory, risk, privacy, and data governance requirements.
Oversee the integration of data from existing legal and enterprise systems to enable effective AI-driven insights.
Minimum Qualifications:
4 years experience hands-on experience implementing AI and GenAI tools within legal teams (e.g. copilots, contract analytics, legal research AI)
Understanding AI risk, data privacy, and responsible-use frameworks
Proven ability to define and execute product and platform roadmaps, delivering both incremental improvements and large-scale transformation
Driving productivity and improved legal service delivery
Strong communicator who builds trusted relationships across Legal and partner teams, and leads adoption of new ways of working
Curious, creative problem-solver with a proactive mindset, comfortable navigating complex, matrixed organizations
Qualifications
Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $215,250.00 annually bonus benefits
