DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Product Design Technician to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Rocky Mount, NC.

Job Summary:

As part of a formal apprenticeship or regional training program, assists Product Design Technicians to learn and develop the skills necessary to obtain a regionally applicable, Certification as an Experienced Technician (e.g. US Department of Labor). Independently performs work to help support area needs during work rotations in other applicable teams.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Ensuring Model and Drawing Quality: By developing your capability to ensure model and drawing quality, you will contribute to the accuracy and reliability of engineering designs, which is crucial for the success of projects.

Creating and Maintaining Product Specifications: Learning to utilize Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T) will enable you to create precise product specifications, ensuring that products meet design requirements and function correctly.

Utilizing CAD Data Management Tools: Your proficiency in using CAD data management tools for configuration control and maintaining security will help safeguard sensitive design information and ensure that design changes are tracked and implemented correctly.

Applying Standards: Acquiring knowledge of company, industry, national, and international standards will allow you to ensure that designs comply with relevant regulations and best practices, enhancing the overall quality and safety of products.

Processing Engineering Work Requests: By learning to process internal engineering work requests efficiently, you will streamline workflows and support the timely completion of engineering tasks.

Engaging with Functional Areas: Engaging with required functional areas as needed will foster collaboration and ensure that all aspects of a project are considered, leading to more comprehensive and effective solutions.

Attending Classes and Training Programs: Your commitment to attending classes and training programs and making appropriate progress will build your skills and knowledge, enabling you to contribute more effectively to your team and projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Technical Skills and Knowledge

Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis:

  1. CAD Proficiency: Mastering Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools to create models that adhere to Cummins' standards.

  2. Analytical Skills: Understanding and applying Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis to ensure robust system designs.

Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems:

  1. System Understanding: Acquiring deep knowledge of mechanical systems to create innovative and reliable design concepts.

  2. Lifecycle Design: Designing with consideration for all lifecycle stages and varying customer requirements to ensure durability and performance in different environments.

Mechanical Design Specification:

  1. Specification Creation: Developing complete specifications using solid models, engineering bill of materials, and detailed drawings.

  2. Standards Compliance: Ensuring specifications meet national, international, industry, and Cummins' standards for accurate and concise part definitions.

Product Configuration and Change Management:

  1. Configuration Management: Establishing and maintaining product baselines, tracking changes, and managing product artifacts from concept to obsolescence.

  2. Change Control: Efficiently releasing, tracking, and communicating changes through work requests to maintain product integrity.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

• Registration in a regionally certified apprenticeship learning or training program required.

• This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s

qualifications and experience, where appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS

PRIMARY DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND CHARACTERISTICS:

This 100% onsite role is primarily responsible for addressing product issues that impact the Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant production lines, both component machining and final product assembly. This is a front line problem solving role that will require Critical Thinking skills, determination, organization, and the ability to work under time constraints to protect production schedules. This role is a mix of hands-on activities and desk work interfacing with multiple software environments, internal combustion engines, and engine components.

This role requires the ability to create multi-slide PowerPoint presentations for both targeted and wide audiences to effectively communicate problem statements and solutions.

This role requires a team-oriented mindset to work within a collaborative structure for effective problem solving in a fast paced production environment.

This role requires a responsible, self-motivated individual who is focused on continuous improvement and personal growth. A successful team member is someone who derives satisfaction from solving problems in real time and has the determination to prevail in less than ideal conditions.

This role requires achieving proficiency with multiple software environments that are unique to Cummins such as IMS, COLS, and CMES, plus MS applications, SharePoint, Windchill, Creo (3D modeling), and other third party software.
